Do you know what an ADU is? It stands for Accessory Dwelling Unit. These units are separate living spaces within a home or on the same property as an existing home. They’re sometimes called backyard cottages, carriage houses, granny flats, mother-in-law apartments, and in Canada they’re called lane houses. They are further defined as an Attached Accessory Dwelling Unit (AADU) or a Detached Accessory Dwelling Unit (DADU). I’m often asked how high to hang a chandelier over a dining table or pendants over a kitchen island. There are general guidelines to use, but often it comes down to preference. Typically, a chandelier is hung about 30′ to 36″ above a table, My dining room chandelier (shown) is actually 37″ above the table. When we were hanging it, it felt too low at 35-36″ and felt right at 37″. Size of your chandelier should be approximately 1/2 to 2/3’s the width of your table.
